Its quaint little shops, restaurants, bars and local cafes are popular by day and by night. The picturesque harbour is a place of history and natural beauty. Once lined with warehouses, stored with fruits of the countryside awaiting export, these buildings are now mostly restaurants, all of which have tables and chairs lining the sparkling sea waters. The castle at the east end of the harbour is a spectacular site, definitely worth a visit. Within its walls there is a 12 century chapel showing reused late Roman capitals and a shipwreck museum, frequently visited by both locals and tourists.
The Icon Museum, located in the former Greek Orthodox Arkhangelos Church is great for exploring both art and history. You can wander around three levels containing fascinating exhibits and icons. Opposite the Museum are the remains of Byzantine catacombs, currently with a restaurant on top! Around 70 of these tombs still remain in Kyrenia, although the majority are now built over.
